Frances Ulmer, chancellor of the University of Alaska-Anchorage and a member of the national oil commission, told her colleagues today at the fourth meeting of the commission that it’s important for the panel to counter unrealistic calls to move the country off of foreign oil in the near term.
“It’s not possible,” she said. “To tell people that we can get to some imaginary goal of completely eliminating imports is so out of bounds with reality. Somebody has to say that.”
The commission then discussed how realistic it is for the country to move to an all-electric vehicle fleet. Ulmer said it will take decades to get to that point. More broadly, the commission stressed the importance of setting realistic goals for how and when the country can move off oil in the final version of their oil spill report.
Last week, the committee released four draft reports that alleged that the Obama administration made a number of misstepsin aftermath of the Gulf oil spill. Those reports are not being discussed at today’s meeting, which is focusing on a number of staff recommendations.
