The Penneco Oil Company, an oil and gas exploration company in Western Pennsylvania, has bypassed the shell game of giving to PACs and 501(c) organizations and decided to just throw up some billboardsin favor of Pennsylvania GOP Senate candidate Pat Toomey and local House seat challengers Tim Burns (R) and Keith Rothfus (R).
The total of the company’s itemized independent expenditures on billboards comes out to a mere $9,260.24, so the decision itself is more significant than the size of the ad purchases. Of course, it’s no indication that the company hasn’t made other contributions of the less trackable sort, but something about an oil company proudly advertising its self-interest in this year of cloak-and-dagger election spending is both quite wonderful and strange.
