Via ThinkProgress, the Spanish-language TV network Univision will not run an ad by Latinos for Reform telling Latinos not to vote. The ad argued that Democratic leaders had let down Latino voters by failing to deliver immigration reform. Robert Deposada, the conservative political consultant who heads Latinos for Reform, has appeared as a political analyst on Univision. But the message of the ad directly conflicts with some of the network’s other campaigns, such as its non-partisan voter mobilization push, Ya Es Hora, and the station will not run the ad:
Univision will not be running any spots from Latinos for Reform related to voting. It is also important to clarify that while Mr. Robert de Posada has on occasion provided political commentary on Univision, representing one of various points of views, he is not in any way affiliated with Univision. Univision prides itself on promoting civic engagement and our extensive national campaigns encourage Hispanics to vote.
Deposada accused the station of succumbing to political pressure, tellingBen Smith, “They got a little bit of pressure from the Democratic Party and they pulled it off.”
ThinkProgress has moreon the conservative ties of Latinos for Reform, including the group’s use of consulting firm Political Compliance Services, led by an aide of Dick Armey. The firm has also consulted with the Hoffmann Foundation and Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, which produced anti-John Kerry ads in 2004.
