With Judge Timothy Black of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio expected to deliver a ruling on the Susan B. Anthony List’s request for a temporary restraining orderagainst the Ohio Elections Commission sometime this afternoon, Democratic pro-life groups are pushing back against the SBA List’s stance. Kristen Day, Executive Director of Democrats For Life of America, has submitted two affidavits opposing the SBA List’s claims that the health care reform bill allows for federally funded abortion, but she says voices like hers in the pro-life community are becoming increasingly marginalized.
“We obviously work real closely in the pro-life community, but now I think I’m going to be kicked out,” Day said. “The pro-life movement is more Republican and more line with the party than I’ve ever seen it. [SBA's claims] are just a classic example of groupthink where if you repeat a claim enough times you’ll all kind of believe it.”
Day claims she formed her group a while back “because the pro-life community wasn’t supporting Democrats and neither was the Democratic Party. Now the Democratic Party is a big tent that does support us, but the traditional pro-life groups and Republicans don’t like that because they want to make it a campaign issue. But if you’re pro-life and not putting your party first, why would you want to get rid of these advocates? Why aren’t they going after the pro-choice Republicans? They’re only going after the purple districts — it’s the same targets that the Republican leadership is going after.”
Day is right that anti-abortion groups, and especially SBA List, have been focusing the majority of their time and energy on a campaign to oust vulnerable pro-life Democratsin moderate-to-conservative districts that stretch across Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania. But they’re also expanding their effortsin the lead-up to election day, launching a $1 million campaign to send out mailings to more than two million voters attacking Democrats’ records on abortion in 42 House Districts. And another group, Americans United for Life, is using radio ads to go after some of the same congressmen in twelve districts.
