The House on Wednesday punted a proposal to impeachPresident George W. Bush to the Judiciary Committee, where it’s almost certain to wallow en route to oblivion. Sponsored by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), the measure leveled 35 separate articles of impeachment against the president, including charges that Bush invaded Iraq without a declaration of war and tortured captives "as a matter of official policy."
The count was 251 to 166to ditch the proposal, with Kucinich joining every Democrat in voting against his own measure. Kucinich’s office declined comment Wednesday evening, saying it was still preparing a public statement.
The 166 members voting to debate the impeachment articles were all Republicans, who hoped to embarrass the Democrats by painting them as politically divisive in a time of economic crisis.
Guess there weren’t enough White House interns in this saga to merit anything but presidential impunity.
