U.S. Sen. Rand Paul(R-Ky.) will be the keynote speaker at the Republican Party of Iowa’s annual “Night of the Rising Stars” fundraiser April 2 at Hoyt Sherman Place in Des Moines.
Paul, who was elected in November to his first term in the U.S. Senate, is the son of potential presidential hopeful U.S. Rep. Ron Paul(R-Texas).
“Sen. Paul represents the new energy of Republicans in Washington,” said Republican Party of Iowa Chairman Matt Strawn. “His dedication to the cause of limited government not only resonated with the voters of Kentucky but catapulted him on to the national stage. Iowa Republicans will be interested to hear his solutions to seriously address the national debt and stop the growth of government.”
In addition to his father’s past and potential future presidential aspirations, Rand Paul has another connection to Iowa politics. The Des Moines-based nonprofit American Future Fundspent heavily in the Kentucky senatorial primary in the hopes of defeating Paul. The group ran numerous TV and radio ads, and even launched a website hoping to discredit the tea party favorite.
Paul responded to the attacks at the time by saying American Future Fund was “trying to ‘Swift Boat’ me” — a reference to ads run in the 2004 presidential campaign against Democrat John Kerry. The attack is appropriate, given that among the group’s national leaders are two media consultants who played key roles in the Swift Boat Veterans for Truthads in 2004 and the Willie Horton ad in 1988.
The American Future Fund, and its sister organization The Progress Project, has deep roots in state Republican politics, including numerous ties to the administration of Gov. Terry Branstad.
