Michigan Senate bill would ban local officials from running for office

The Senate version of a bill to expand the powers of state-appointed emergency financial managers contains a controversial provision banning local officials from running for office. A Senate Fiscal Agency analysis of the package as passed by the Senate Education Committee finds that it would: Provide that an elected chief administrative officer or governing body member in office at the time of receivership would be ineligible to run for office in that local government for six years

The Senate version of a bill to expand the powers of state-appointed emergency financial managers contains a controversial provision banning local officials from running for office.
A Senate Fiscal Agency analysis of the packageas passed by the Senate Education Committee finds that it would:
Provide that an elected chief administrative officer or governing body member in office at the time of receivership would be ineligible to run for office in that local government for six years.
Last month Wayne State University constitutional law professor Robert Sedler told Michigan Messenger that he doesn’t believe such a provision will make it into a finalized bill.
“It’s difficult to see how the state could say if you can’t balance the budget you can’t run for office,” he said.
