Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabeereached out to Iowa supporters of his political action committee Thursday in a fundraising pitch that focused on abortion.
“Today Huck PAC is hosting an online fundraiser in support of pro-life candidates,” read the email message. “Events like this are why I formed Huck PAC, my national political action committee. … We need to elected more pro-life candidates to the next Congress so we can overturn Roe v. Wade and end the scourge of abortion.”
Huckabee, who emerged as the victor of the 2008 Iowa caucuses, has yet to formally announce whether or not he will join the race for 2012. Nonetheless, he was overwhelmingly proclaimed the frontrunner by The Iowa Independent’s political panelists in our first 2012 Power Rankings.
A common visitor to the state since 2008 — often in support of social conservative Bob Vander Plaats— Huckabee is again in the Hawkeye State today as part of a controversial gathering of pastors known as the Iowa Renewal Project. During a similar gathering prior to the 2008 caucuses Huckabee was the only GOP presidential contender who spoke. This year he is joined at the event by three others — Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, former U.S. House SpeakerNewt Gingrich and Minnesota U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann— during the two-day, all-expenses-paid conference.
