Our new Arizona-based politics reporter John Dougherty came on board today and he’s already broken news! Sen. John McCain’s campaign has named their home turf a "swing state"— startling news considering McCain has served as Arizona’s U.S. senator for 26 years. The state is typically a Republican stronghold, having gone red in all but one presidential election since 1952. Bill Clinton picked up Arizona in 1996, but only by a 2.2% margin over Bob Dole.
This should be just the first of many interesting campaign scoops coming out of Phoenix. Dougherty, who has written for daily and weekly publications in Arizona for the last 24 years, will be writing about McCain for The Washington Independent through the general election. We’re glad he’s on board!
