Robert Paul, son of Ron and brother of Rand, has joined at least seven other people who have said they intend to run for the U.S. Senate seat that will open up in Texas when Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R) steps down at the end of her current term.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reportsthat Paul hasn’t made an official decision or begun fundraising, but he is strongly considering mounting a campaign.
Paul tells the Star-Telegram:
“„“I have thought about running…I am very happy as a physician, but (I) have a lot of concern about the debt.”
If he enters the race, Paul would have to play catch-up with some of the people who have made their candidacies official. Former state Solicitor General Ted Cruz, former Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert and former Texas Secretary of State Roger Williams have all raised more than a million dollars since announcing their campaigns. The Pauls, however, have little trouble fundraising— despite less-than-expected returnson some occasions — and with the public support of his father and brother, Robert would likely be able to scrounge up a few million for his campaign in short order.
His homespun, Jeff Foxworthyesque deliveryhas received some attention from Ron Paul supportersadvocating a Paul family takeover of Congress and who have suggested in the past that he could run for Hutchison’s soon-to-be vacated seat. However, this is the first time Robert Paul himself has talked about running.
Robert is arguably one of the less likely political candidates among Ron Paul’s five children. Paul’s third son, Ronnie, is the director of his father’s Campaign for Liberty, a non-profit focused on libertarian economic policy, with a particular focus on overhauling the Federal Reserve. His daughter Lori Paul Pyeatt is the treasurer of Liberty PAC, the fundraising arm of Ron Paul’s campaigns. His other daughter, Joy Paul LeBlanc, like Robert, is a Texas doctorwho has campaigned for her father but never served in an official capacity in a political organization.
