The Reverend Jesse Jackson says the move by Benton Harbor Emergency Financial Manager Joseph Harris is illegal.
In an interview with Fox 2 News, Jackson says he will work with residents to take the issue to the U.S. Department of Justice and if necessary the U.S. Supreme Court.
“The right to vote must not be tampered with,” Jackson said. “In fact if it happens in Benton Harbor it can happen in Detroit. The idea of disenfranchising the elected officials by the governor is much too much power.”
Jackson says he will work with local church and civic leaders to form a coalition to file a lawsuit over Harris’ usurpation of the power of local elected officials in Benton Harbor.
