Tony McDonald, senior vice chairman of the Young Conservatives of Texas, credits his organization with helping craft the language of state Rep. Wayne Christian’s (R-Center) budget amendment requiring universities with state-funded “gender and sexuality” centers to spend an equal amount of state money on “family and traditional values” centers.
McDonald said the group turned to Christian’s office a few weeks before the House budget debate with their idea to fund traditional values centers, as well as mandating that state-funded colleges and universities devote at least 10 percent of courses to providing instruction on “Western civilization” – the latter amendment eventually failed.
The traditional values center measure, said McDonald, is not merely about creating family and traditional values centers, but is a “clever way” to work around directly defunding taxpayer-supported gender and sexuality centers that are accepting of homosexuality.
“Universities are so left-wing that they cannot fathom spending public money promoting traditional values,” he said. “I believe these centers are advocating a social and political agenda and we should defund them. The amendment points out the absurdity of funding a political message.”
Critics, such as LGBT media source the Dallas Voice, contend Christian’s amendment is homophobic and anti-gay. The measure has spawned a satirical Twitter account U-TX Family Valuesand a Change.org petitionthat currently has more than 170 signatures.
McDonald laughs at the notion traditional values are pervasive at universities, saying ‘pro-homosexuality’ is a commonplace facet of the left-wing culture on campus. He suggested that if he walked through the University of Texas campus – where he attends Law School – with a T-shirt that read “Homosexuality is immoral” he would be treated as “pure evil,” cause an uproar and likely be sent to the Dean’s office.
“Traditional family values, nuclear families are what is normal and what is right. Homosexuality is outside what is normal and what is right. I don’t think student organizations for gay rights need taxpayer money to promote their message. They are doing just fine promoting their social and political agendas as is,” McDonald said.
