State Democrats introduced legislation Monday aimed at restoring six weeks worth of unemployment insurance cut by the GOP-dominated legislature earlier this year.
The legislation was introduced in the House by Rep. Jim Ananich (D-Flint) and in the Senate by Senate Democratic Floor Leader Tupac A. Hunter (D-Detroit).
“These unemployment resources will be more necessary than ever following the job-killing state budget passed last week,” said Ananich in a press release. The Flint lawmaker also sits on the House Appropriations Committee. “If the majority is unwilling to truly put job creation first, the least they can do is make sure families can survive while they try to find work.”
The cut was made in March. Republican law makers saidit was necessary to address a nearly $4 billion deficit in the state’s unemployment fund.
