The Iowa Senate is expected to debate, and possibly vote on, a new abortion bill that would allow late-term abortion clinics to open in Iowa if approved through a certification of need process.
Senate File 534, sponsored by Sen. Joe Bolkcom(D-Iowa City) was introduced last weekin a Ways and Means subcommittee hearing. The bill was written in response to an Iowa House abortion bill aimed at keeping abortion doctor LeRoy Carhartfrom opening a surgical abortion clinic in Iowa.
The Iowa Senate convened at 1 p.m. today and immediately both parties went into caucus.
