Emmett Township Public Safety officials confirm that firefighters from the department have investigated 9-1-1 reports that there was a heavy odor of oil near the Ceresco dam.
Firefighters were on the scene shortly after midnight, and found nothing. With heavy rains combined with high temperatures, it is possible oil contamination still in the river system was released, causing the odor.
Ceresco dam is only a few miles away from the ground zero location of last summer’s pipeline rupture which spewed an estimated one million gallons of heavy Cold Lake crude oil into the Talmadge Creek and the Kalamazoo River. The spill contaminated over two dozen miles of water way, created a recommended evacuation zone and resulted in a complete upheaval of the life of thousands of residents of Calhoun county.
The rupture also resulted in heavy political pressure and strict oversight of the Lakehead Pipeline 6B. The pipeline is owned by Enbridge Energy Partners of Canada.
