House Republicans may place more rigid amendments on an abortion bill passed by the Iowa Senate last week.
Senate File 534 would allow new free-standing late-term abortion clinics open in Iowa, with a stipulation that doctors get a certification of need approval from the state of Iowa prior to opening. Senate Democrats say approval will be difficult to obtain because the need for such clinics will be a hard sell; however, Republicans countered that the bill does not ban any type of abortion in the state..
The bill passed the Senate along party lines, 26 to 23. Iowa House Speaker Kraig Paulsen(R-Hiawatha), assigned it to the House Ways and Means Committee, where it is expected legislators will amend the bill to ban at least late-term abortions.
Paulsen told The Iowa Independent last weekHouse Republicans would not pass an abortion regulation bill that would “formalize” the process for a clinic to open, but not prohibit at least late-term abortions simultaneously.
