President Barack Obama’s proposed cuts to federal heating assistance could impact more than 615,000 low income households in Michigan, advocates warn.
Obama has proposed cutting funds for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Programby $2.5 billion.
The Jackson Citizen Patriotreports that this would mean $120 million less to keep the heat on in Michigan.
LIHEAP funding is distributed to each state to assist low-income families with energy costs. In Michigan, the funding is used for state emergency relief, home heating credit and weatherization assistance.
In Jackson County, 850 households received state emergency relief funds in June, with payments averaging about $306, according to the state Department of Human Services. It is a crisis intervention program and provides payment for heating fuel, electricity, home repairs and more.
Community Action Agency received about $260,000 in LIHEAP funding this year to provide deliverable fuels such as propane and wood to about 300 clients in Jackson, Lenawee and Hillsdale counties.
Michigan’s Democratic Senators Debbie Stabenow and Carl Levin and Governor Rick Snyder oppose the cuts.
