Republican Party of Iowa Chairman Matt Strawnsaid Wednesday Iowa’s famed caucuses aren’t tilting toward the conservative right, in spite of suggestions that the first-in-the-nation event could fall by the wayside if Republican candidates feel as though they must cater to extreme ideology agendas.
During his guest segment on MSNBC’s “The Daily Rundown,”Strawn said Republican voter registration has grown since the 2008 elections.
“And many of those new people that have been participating in our process, some are certainly aligned with the tea party, but others really got activated by what they saw coming out of Washington,” he said.
Strawn is not the only Republican in recent weeks to tout Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucus. Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad has defended the event’s impertinence, and warned prospects like former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romneyit would behoove him to woo Iowans if he wants to give the White House a serious bid.
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabeewho said last week he will not seek the presidency in 2012— won the 2008 caucus in Iowa for the Republicans; President Barack Obamaemerged as the Democrat favorite.
The Iowa caucuses are scheduled for Feb. 6, 2012.
