As the Republican-controlled Iowa House aims to debate their omnibus budget billWednesday to bring an end to the Legislative session, Democrats in control of the other chamber will continue their series of budget hearings, Senate Appropriations Chair Bob Dvorsky(D-Coralville) said.
“We hope sunshine, openness, and transparency will build momentum for a budget compromise that protects the top priorities of Iowa families,” Dvorsky said Monday. “Since Republicans have rejected our offer to make the negotiations themselves public, these Open Budget Hearings are the next best thing.”
The Democrats started hearings Tuesday, focusing on education. Today’s agenda includes Health and Human Services issues. The hearing began at 9 a.m. in Room 116 at the state capitol.
Hearings are open to the public, and will be streamed live on the Senate Democrats’ website, where a full schedule can also be found.
“With one billion dollars in the state’s savings accounts, Republicans are needlessly insisting on an austerity budget that will hurt Iowa families, local schools, and local economic development,” said Dvorsky. “By bringing more openness and transparency to the negotiations, we hope to help Iowans better understand what’s at stake and increase the pressure on Republicans to compromise by stepping away from their extreme demands.”
