Gov. Susana Martinez announced Monday that she will extend a state program to supplement federal food stamp benefits for 4,000 low-income elderly and disabled New Mexicans, the AP reports. The program was set to expireon July 1, as the Legislature did not appropriate money for it.
The governor will use money from the Recovery Actto fund the program through September; afterwards, Martinez said that the Legislature can use the September special session to allocate funds for the program, which costs about $50,000 a month.
The program ensures that New Mexicans receive at least $25 in food assistance per month, while the minimum federal SNAP, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, benefit is $16 a month.
