The Facts in Brazoria County reported this morning that U.S. Rep Ron Paul (R-Texas) won’t be seeking a new term in Congress, planning to focus instead on his latest presidential bid:
“I felt it was better that I concentrate on one election,” Paul said. “It’s about that time when I should change tactics.”
Paul told The Facts he made his announcement early, so new candidates would have plenty of time to build their campaigns.
The 75-year-old Congressman has spent 12 terms representing Lake Jackson along Texas’ Gulf Coast, but saw his district transformed by the Texas Legislature in last month’s special session.
Paul’s new 14th Districtis smaller, nudging closer to the Louisiana border to Beaumont, areas Paul hasn’t represented before, with a greater proportion of black voters. Victoria and other western counties that have long supported Paul tacked onto first-term Rep. Blake Farenthold’s 27th district instead.
Still, the seven-term Congressman has overcome redistricting challenges before. He faces a steeper challenge in a G.O.P. field that’s criss-crossing Iowa ahead of the Ames straw poll, where he’s banking on making a big splash.
In his third run for the White House, Paul’s hoping to sell conservatives on the message that he’s made a career out of the fiscal conservative, small-government values that are finally popular today.
Paul’s campaign says he raised over $4 million last quarter, though he came in fifth in recent polls of Iowa votersand conservative leaders.
Update at 2:24: According to the Houston Chronicle, Paul said today that redistricting didn’t figure in his decision. “I wasn’t overjoyed with getting the new district, but that was not a major factor in my decision,” he told the paper.
