Mich. House GOP will act on health care exchanges this fall

Michigan is one of a dozen states that have taken no action to implement state-based health care exchanges in advance of the Affordable Care Act coming into full force in 2014. The Washington Post’s Ezra Klein reports that 33 states have considered bills — with 10 passing their bills — nine states have passed legislation which do not create exchanges but do declare an intent to do so, and a dozen remain without any action on it all.

Michigan is one of a dozen states that have taken no action to implement state-based health care exchanges in advance of the Affordable Care Act coming into full force in 2014.
The Washington Post’s Ezra Klein reportsthat 33 states have considered bills — with 10 passing their bills — nine states have passed legislation which do not create exchanges but do declare an intent to do so, and a dozen remain without any action on it all.
The exchanges are designed to create a larger insurance pool to spread out risks for coverage and thereby reducing costs of coverage for health insurance.
And while Michigan may have not taken any action yet, Ari Adler, spokesperson for Speaker of the House Jase Bolger(R-Marshall), says that will change this fall.
“Our caucus will be studying the issue this fall,” he tells Michigan Messenger in an email. “Whether people like President Obama’s idea of federally mandated healthcare or not, we need to start looking at this issue and determining what will work best for the people of Michigan. If we do nothing, the system will default to the federal government and we’re not convinced that’s best for anyone.”
