Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson said that Gov. Susana Martinez had the prerogative to add items to the special session agenda beyond redistricting as he stopped by the Roundhouse Thursday. More from the Journal:
“„“I think I had the same criticism (as the governor). I would have called a special session and put stuff on, and whatever I put on was way in excess of what should be addressed,” Johnson said. “I think the governor clearly has the right to put on whatever she wants to put on and, of course, the Legislature has the converse ability to reject it.”
Johnson was governor during the last redistricting, but didn’t add other items to the agenda — the redistricting process took 17 days and eventually wound up in state courts. He addressed the driver’s license issue by saying, “Get government out of all of that stuff and just get them in the business of issuing a work visa.”
The current driver’s license law passed after Johnson left office in 2003.
