The New York Department of Environmental Conservation has extended the public comment period on a proposed new policy on hydrofracking regulation from 60 days to 90 days. The agency has recommended ending the ban on fracking in that state and allow it with some regulations.
The proposed policy is more than 1,000 pages long and a coalition of environmental groups had asked Gov. Andrew Cuomo to extend the comment period to 120 days to allow a full examination of the details.
New York has been one of the focal points of the fracking controversy because gas companies are intent on accessing the Marcellus Shale natural gas deposits that underlie much of the state.
