USDA assures Iowa farmers that insurance will pay for Missouri River flood damage

USDA officials want to reassure farmers with crop insurance that recent flooding events along the Missouri River is considered a natural event, which will be covered. “The flooding happening now is the result of extraordinary amounts of rainfall this spring and winter snow runoff, which is a natural cause of loss and is covered by crop insurance. We’ve spoken to the crop insurance companies and they assure us that they have adequate staff with additional adjusters sent as needed to help settle claims as soon as they can get into the fields,” said William Murphy, administrator of the USDA’s Risk Management Agency, which oversees the federal crop insurance program

We’ve spoken to the crop insurance companies and they assure us that they have adequate staff with additional adjusters sent as needed to help settle claims as soon as they can get into the fields,” said William Murphy, administrator of the USDA’s Risk Management Agency, which oversees the federal crop insurance program.
Impacted farmers and ranchers should contact their crop insurance companies at the first sign of damage to insured crops.
Some farmers have voiced concerns that the flooded lands may not be covered by their insurance if there was a breach of a water-supporting structure near their land, such as the collapse of a levee. Murphy noted that actions taken by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have not affected the coverage farmers have paid for with their crop insurance premiums.
Specific questions, he said, should be directed to RMA regional offices.
