U.S. Rep. Ron Paul(R-Texas) claimed prime estate for the August Ames Straw Poll, his state campaign chairman Dr. Drew Ivers said late Thursday afternoon.
Ivers said the campaign placed the highest bid, taking the spot occupied by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romneyin 2007.
“The Ron Paul campaign is making a full push to be competitive all across Iowa. Our campaign believes this includes the Iowa Straw Poll and we are delighted to place the winning bid for the best spot at the event,” Ivers said in a release.
The Straw Poll is one of the more prominently known fundraisers for the Republican Party of Iowa, and a major opportunity for exposure for Republican presidential candidates. Candidates must bid a minimum of $15,000 for a spot. Paul’s Iowa campaign staff confirmed they spent $31,000 for the spot.
Six candidates will participate in the Straw Poll this year. The Des Moines Register is reportingU.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann(R-Minn), Atlanta businessman Herman Cain, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum(R-Penn) and U.S. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter(R-Mich) will compete with Paul.
McCotter has not officially entered the 2012 race for President.
Romney, a heavy player in Iowa during the 2008 election, has already stated he will sit the Straw Poll, slated for Aug. 13, out.
