The Environmental Protection Agency announced late last weekthat it has chosen seven areas in five states to focus on in an ongoing study of the effects of hydrofracking on water quality.
None of the sites are in Michigan, where a great deal of land has been leased to energy companies for possible fracking but little activity has begun. Three of the sites are in Pennsylvania, all located over the Marcellus shale. Shale deposits are where fracking is used to mine natural gas.
The other sites are in Louisiana, North Dakota, Texas and and Colorado.
