Though it has been buzzed about for months, Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., officially announced her candidacy for the Oval Office early this morning. Bachmann, who has been a fixture on the anti-abortion circuit, took part in a presidential forumat the National Right to Life Convention in Jacksonville last Friday. #
She held a “Welcome Home” event in her hometown of Waterloo, Iowa, on Sunday night, before making the official announcement this morning. #
“„An enthusiastic crowd greeted U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann in Waterloo Sunday night for an aptly named “welcome home” event where she introduced her family and discussed the home town values she hoped to bring to Washington, D.C. #
“Tomorrow I’m going to speak to the nation,” Bachmann said, referencing her plans to formally launch her campaign for president Monday, also in her hometown of Waterloo. “But tonight I want to speak to all of you.” #
Known for her fiery and often controversial rhetoric, Bachmann dialed it down for the Sunday night gathering, often noting the joy she had in the community as a child or discussing meeting with an old family friend while touring her old neighborhood. Outside of having the audience chant along with her that Obama will be a “one … term … president,” Bachmann mostly left the attacks to her introductory crew at the microphone. #
“We need more Waterloo. We need more Iowa. We need more closeness, more families, more love for each other, more concern about each other,” Bachmann told the crowd gathered at the Electric Park Ballroom. #
On Friday, Bachmann appeared via Skype to a crowd of pro-lifers at the 2011 National Right to Life Convention in Jacksonville. #
Critiquing Obama’s legislative decisions and his “pro-abortion” Supreme Court nominees, Bachmann said that she wanted to ensure he is a one-term president. In a variation on a theme (nearly all of those who spoke at the event mentioned the Obama health care plan), Bachmann said that “ObamaCare” would “open the door for federal funding of abortion in this country.” Bachmann also alleged that Obama had changed the perception of abortion, which she argued most Americans find “morally reprehensible.” #
“Let me make this clear to all of you in Jacksonville. As president of the United States, I promise to you: I will repeal ObamaCare. You can take that to the bank,” she said. #
