Iowa Gov. Terry Branstadwill cross the state today and tomorrow, first returning to Sioux City today to further assess flood damage, now estimated to be in the tens of millions of dollars, and then will go to eastern Bettendorf the next day to meet President Barack Obama.
“I think anytime the President of the United States comes to your state and you’ve been invited as the governor to attend, it’s appropriate to do so,” he said this morning.
Obama will visit the Quad Citiesto tour the Alcoa metal manufacturing plant and deliver a speech about his efforts to boost the national economy and job creation. Branstad said he intends to ask Obama for a presidential disaster declaration that would give federal funding to the state’s western counties decimated by flood damage.
“I certainly intend to bring that subject up with the President tomorrow,” he said. “I’ve been invited and I’m planning to attend. I can’t imagine they wouldn’t allow the Govenor to ask a question.”
Branstad also echoed fellow Republicans’ disdain about Obama’s management of the national economy.
“I also have concerns about the way the President has managed the economy, and if I get the opportunity, I’ll bring that up as well,” he said.
