Iowa courts continue offering low-income residents grants for legal services

Low-income Iowans will be able to continue accessing legal services, as the Iowa Judicial Branch announced this week it has approved $321,000 in grants funded by Iowa lawyers trust accounts.
Grants will go to 15 non-profits statewide, Judicial Branch officials said.
The program, Interest on the Lawyers’ Trust Account — or IOLTA — has funded low income legal services in the state since 1985. Grants are created by using interest funds on pooled lawyer trust accounts.
“Even in good economic times, many people cannot afford to pay for legal representation,” Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Cadysaid in a release from the Iowa Judicial Branch.
“The recession has worsened this problem. More Iowans face serious civil legal problems such as home foreclosure and debt collection actions. At the same time, more Iowans are struggling financially. Given these circumstances, IOLTA grants are especially helpful and important. ”
A full list of benefiting non-profits may be found on the Iowa Judicial Branch’s website. The grants will fund only civil cases.
