As GOP candidates geared up to spend the holiday weekend in early states like Iowa and New Hampshire, the field for President grew by one, as U.S. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter(R-Mich) officially announced his candidacy Saturday.
Media reports said McCotter made the announcement at an outdoor rock music festival Saturday. Though late last week, the news leaked that McCotter would announce over the holiday weekend, the announcement itself was reportedly low-key, as the Congressman addressed a crowd from the stage, with only a music stand and campaign sign in front of him, according to the Detroit News.
McCotter is a virtual unknown in the candidate field. A lawyer by education, he was elected to Congress in 2002, after a stint in Michigan state politics.
McCotter’s political leanings, while undoubtedly Republican, include both moderate and social conservative views. He is a member of the Republican Main Street Partnershipwith other federal lawmakers, including the moderate Maine Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe. However, McCotter, a Catholic, is also a member of the Republican Study Committee, which is the U.S. House’s Conservative caucus and promotes social Conservative views.
The five-term Congressman has made some waves in the Hawkeye State already, after representatives sent to the Ames Straw Poll auction on his behalf declined to identify their candidate, causing a stir among other campaigns. McCotter is confirmed to participate in the straw poll next month.
