In the wake of last weekend’s spill of around 1,000 barrels of oil into the Yellowstone River in Montana, Rep. Fred Upton’s House Energy and Commerce Committee will hold hearings later this month on pipeline safety.
The Hill reports:
Charlotte Baker, spokeswoman for Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-Mich.), said the panel’s Energy and Power Subcommittee will hold a hearing on pipeline safety legislation by the end of the month.
Baker said Republicans are still writing their pipeline safety bill and will unveil the legislation in the coming weeks.
“While the details of this tragic event are still unfolding, anytime a pipeline accident occurs it is a reminder that our safety efforts need to be improved,” Baker said in the statement. “Chairman Upton has expressed his commitment to strengthening pipeline safety standards and intends to move legislation this summer.”
During the 2009/2010 campaign cycle, Upton receivedmore contributions from those in the energy and natural resources business — those most likely to own pipelines — than any other sector of industry, more than $384,000.
