Unemployment in the U.S. hit a new high mark in June, media reports said Friday, hitting 9.2 percent nationally and drawing scorn from several top Republicans who placed the blame on President Barack Obamaand his administration.
June saw the fewest number of jobs added in the last several months, with 18,000 net jobs generated.
GOP candidates have wasted no time finger-pointing, even before the numbers were released Friday. Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlentysaid Thursday the U.S. is mired in “crushing unemployment levels,” and rival U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann(R-Minn) said the figures are the result of Obama’s “economic policies.”
“The President promised if we passed the massive stimulus package that unemployment wouldn’t go above eight percent; we are now at 9.2 percent,” Bachmann said through a campaign spokeswoman. “The President promised ‘shovel-ready’ projects that would create jobs, but now the President says ‘shovel-ready was not as shovel-ready as we expected.’ Mr. President, it’s time to take the shovel out of your hand and stop digging.”
In Iowa, however, unemployment has hovered in the low six percent range for the last several months, Iowa Workforce Developmentspokeswoman Katie Hommer said.
The next percent release will be July 22, Hommer said, and Iowa officials do not expect any surprises either way.
“It’s likely to remain where it is now,” Hommer said of the state’s unemployment figures.
