American Federation for Children is creating a new media affairs position in Louisiana, signaling a redoubling of efforts by the school voucher group in the state.
The position was posted on Facebook July 6. The American Independent called AFC to confirm the position is new.
“We’ve had interest there for quite a while,” said AFC spokesperson Malcom Glenn, who also offered that AFC is trying to “expand an existing program that’s there already.”
“„generate “significant positive publicity for school choice programs and efforts in the state; assisting in-state staff and allies in communicating with legislators and key stakeholders; developing content, including news releases, newsletters, and advisories; planning small-to medium sized promotional and informational events; conducting radio media tours and scheduling editorial board meetings; and assisting with the marketing and implementation of school choice programs to generate increased parental interest in those programs.
The American Federation for Childrenactivelycampaigns state legislatures to consider school vouchers, a system of education that would use public education dollars to subsidize student enrollment in private schools. North Carolina, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin are states that have recently expanded or wrote into law school voucher legislation. In the Hoosier State, AFC reported(PDF) nearly $2 million in expenditures for the period between October 1 and December 31, 2010. AFC also paid Hoosiers for Economic Growth, a group with a PAC that is active school voucher legislation, $375,000 in contributions for 2010. As reported by TAI, Indiana’s legislation now facesa legal challenge from 14 plaintiffs, including representatives of religious institutions. In Louisiana, a different school voucher group ledby current AFC chairperson Betsy DeVos, All Children Matter, operated in Louisiana until this year. Between 2008 and 2010, ACM’s PAC raised $128,000. For 2011, Louisiana Federation for Children — the state arm of AFC — has raised $110,000. Those figures were acquired from the Louisiana Campaign Finance Portal. In May, TAI also reportedon the funding AFC contributed to Wisconsin in 2010. That amount totaled over $700,000.
