Minnesota Congressman told college activists at a gathering last week that conservatives like Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann want to keep women barefoot and pregnant.
“We live in an era of extremism,” Ellison said in his July 6 address to the 2011 Campus Progress National Conference in Washington, D.C.
“These same people who want to shrink government until you can drown it in a bathtub also want mom to get back in the kitchen and to take her shoes off and get pregnant,” Ellison told the crowd. “They’re offended by strong powerful women. Here’s the sad part: some of them are women themselves — Michele Bachmann could be an example.”
The comments came in response to a question from an audience member about how to approach the issue of the pay gap between men and women.
Earlier in his speech, Ellison urged the progressive activists not to cede grassroots organizing to the tea party.
“Don’t you give them that red, white and blue, don’t you give them that Pledge of Allegiance,” Ellison told the crowd. “You grab it and say liberty and justice for [all].”
Campus Progress is a national organization that supports progressive youth activism; it’s backed by the Center for American Progress. Other speakers at the two day conference included former Pres. Bill Clinton and Kathleen Sebelius, secretary of Health and Human Services.
