A Senate bill to have government contracts in the public domain has been on shaky ground for a while. But The Hill newspaper reportsthat it might be salvaged by the support of both John McCain and Barack Obama.
McCain called Obama Monday night asking if he could co-sponsor a bill on a federal database spotlighting all government contracts. Obama had been working on the bill for a while with Oklahoma Republican Tom Coburn. Coburn told The Hill that he’s "not good at politics" and it hadn’t occurred to him to get McCain on board.
The bill is a follow-up on the "Google for Government" 2006 bill that created USASpending.orgthat shows every organization that receives federal money. It would spell out what exactly the contract is for and whether it was competitively bid on. Congressional oversight of government contracting has had difficulty getting translated into legislation. This could be a notable exception.
