A new Galluppoll shows that while a plurality of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents would pick former Gov. Mitt Romney as their preferred presidential nominee, more Southern Republicans would pick Texas Gov. Rick Perry or former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. Neither Perry nor Palin has officially announced a presidential campaign.
Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani achieved second place among Eastern Republicans, after Romney, while Rep. Michele Bachmann (Minn.) is in a statistical tie for second place with Perry, Palin and Giuliani among Midwestern and Western Republicans.
Among announced candidates, Romney and Bachmann are in first and second place, respectively, in all four regions of the country. Rep. Ron Paul (Texas) is statistically tied for second place with Bachmann among Western Republicans.
Since the passage of the Civil Rights Act, the South has gradually become the geographical bastion of the Republican Party’s support. With the partial exception of George W. Bush (born in Connecticut), no Southerner has been nominated for the presidency by the GOP ever since.
Other national indicators are also showing that Perryis currently Romney’s strongest opponent, and some influential observers saythat while his campaign is unannounced, it has nevertheless gained significant momentum.
