Rep. John Conyers is the lead sponsor of a bill that would allow the states to require online retailers to collect sales tax on purchases made by residents of that state.
MLive.com reports:
The Detroit Democrat on Friday introduced the latest version of the “Main Street Fairness Act,” legislation that would give states who streamline their tax code the authority to force online retailers to collect sales tax regardless of where those retailers are physically located.
Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois introduced a companion bill in the Senate.
“This bill will level the playing field for local businesses by ensuring that online retailers collect the same sales taxes that brick-and-mortar retailers already do,” Conyers said in a released statement. “This will help our state and local governments avoid devastating layoffs and cuts to essential services vital to the well-being of our local communities.”
That would certainly help cash-strapped state governments with revenue, especially here in Michigan.
