Rep. Dave Agema (R-Grandville) is planning hearings on Sept. 13 to push his anti-undocumented workers legislative agenda.
On his Facebook page Agema postedthe following message on Thursday:
Anyone who has been hurt or lost their job to an illegal that wishes to testify in Lansing before the committee on Sept 13 concerning why we need to stop illegal immigration, please call my office at 517-373-8900. It seems many oprganizations [sic] are trying to continue the practice of allowing illegal immigration in Michigan.
And in a second post he wrote:
The Mi. Chamber of Commerce, Farm Bureau and Catholic Bishops are opposing bills stopping illegal immigration. Speak up know, or lose the battle.
Agema forgot to mention that Gov. Rick Snyder — also a Republican — opposessuch legislation.
Ryan Bates, executive director for Alliance for Immigration Rights and Reform Michigan, had this to say about Agema’s advertisement:
“I support Governor Snyder’s position on this issue — an Arizona-style racial-profiling law is just more divisive politics that will hurt jobs and innovation here in Michigan. At a time when Michigan is losing population, we simply can’t afford to put up a ‘you’re not welcome’ sign to the world.”
