Senate GOPers Stalling on Climate Change Bill « The Washington Independent

In the Senate right now, where the Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Actis being debated, the clerk is reading all 157 pages of the Boxer substitute amendment out loud. Republican senators forced the clerk to do so because, they say, they haven’t had enough time to read it. (Sen. Boxer (D-Calif.) released the amendment two weeks ago.)
Environmental groups are unsurprisingly sayingthat some Senate Republicans are doing all they can to delay voting on the bipartisan bill, co-sponsored by John Warner (R-Va.) and Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.). And, as The Wall Street Journal’s Jeffrey Ball pointed outthis week on NPR’s Day to Day, climate change is a regional issue. Coal state senators are bound to oppose legislation that threatens the coal industry, for example. Senators from states that get energy from natural gas or nuclear are more likely to support legislation that strives to reduce CO2 emissions.

UPDATE: Senate Republicans actually ended up forcing the clerk to read the ENTIRE bill aloud, not just the Boxer amendment. That’s 492 exciting pages. Poor clerks.
