Democrats in the House are urging their Republican colleagues to take action on a package of bills that would ban fracking until more is known about whether it can be done safety.
HB 5149-5151 directsthe Depts. of Environmental Quality and Natural Resources to research the public health, environmental and and natural resource impacts of removing natural gas from Michigan’s shale formations through hydrofracking.
It specifically directs the agencies to consider the probability that fracking will contaminate surface water or groundwater and the likelihood of damage to properties around the fracking sites.
It also asks for research into the longterm availability of water resources to support water-intensive fracking operations and the possibility of wildlife habitat fragmentation.
The legislation would require the establishment of a process for full public disclosure of all fracking chemicals at least 30 days before fracking operations begin.
In a statement today the House Democrats said that Representatives Lisa Brown (D-West Bloomfield), Ellen Cogen Lipton (D-Huntington Woods), Brandon Dillon (D-Grand Rapids) and Jeff Irwin (D-Ann Arbor) will join with members of conservation groups to push for the legislation in press conferences across the state on Monday.
