Thompson’s Widow: ‘Hunter Couldn’t Tolerate The Repression’

The Caucus reportsthe McCain campaign press corps was joined yesterday in Aspen, Colo., by Anita Thompson, widow of famed gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson. Thompson, who died in 2005 of a self-inflicted shotgun blast, was a long-time resident of nearby Woody Creek. He documented the 1972 presidential election for Rolling Stone — which later became a book, "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ‘72." Anita Thompson had this to say about the current state of campaign journalism:
“„“These are Hunter’s people, and I’m happy to be back with them,” said Mrs. Thompson, who is writing for the Huffington Post and was sitting in the press section at the McCain event. “Hunter would be back here drinking and having fun, but I don’t know if he could have tolerated the repression,” she said, noting the regimentation of reporters and their lack of access to Mr. McCain.
However, I suspect Hunter would have appreciated the utter weirdness of McCain’s recent campaign stopat the Sturgis [S.D.] Motorcycle Rally a couple weeks ago.
