Something To Die For Is A Good Book, So There

James Joyner doesn’t really arguewith my Webb piece today, but he does dial down the enthusiasm level for Webb’s novel:
“„I’m about a third of the way through Something to Die For, which I bought off a remainders rack circa 1992 but never got around to reading, and just can’t force myself to finish given its general lack of goodness as a novel.
I dunno, no accounting for taste and all that. Is my literary taste actually… bad? You know, I hope not, because I’m a fan of it. James offers a strong case for his own good taste by recommending Matthew Yglesias’s excellent book Heads In The Sand, which you should buy first and read second. (Yglesias is my roommate.)
One other thing on Something To Die For: one of its central themes is the divide between civilians and the military. Achieving mutual understanding on that front just got more difficult. I’m saddened to report that Charlie Moskos, one of the premiere military sociologists of the day, passed away over the weekend after a struggle with cancer. RIP.
