Food for thought: According to commentshe made yesterday to The Weekly Standard’s Steve Hayes, Sen. John McCain is willing to consider either former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge and Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.) for his running mate, despite the fact that both men are pro-choice. However, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg would be unacceptable because of his additional support for gay rights. From The Weekly Standard:
"I think it’s a fundamental tenet of our party to be pro-life but that does not mean we exclude people from our party that are pro-choice. We just have a — albeit strong — but just it’s a disagreement. And I think Ridge is a great example of that. Far more so than Bloomberg — because Bloomberg is pro-gay rights, pro, you know, a number of other issues."
Is it fair to interpret McCain’s statement to mean that he believes abortion rights may be slowly escaping its status as the third-rail in GOP politics? If not, why would he even take the risk of floating it — to a conservative magazine, no less? Yet homosexuality remains a bridge too far?
But what is to be made of this: McCain reportedlymet privately with the head of the Log Cabin Republicans, a gay advocacy group, AND he also apparently accepteda $2,300 contribution from the owner of Manhunt.net, a gay hookup Website (slogan: Get on. Get off.)
I’m confused.
