Congress Overrides Farm Bill Veto

That didn’t take long. Just one day after President George W. Bush vetoedCongress’s $300 billion farm bill, congressional lawmakers in both chambers voted overwhelmingly to override it. The bill is popular for expanding funding for nutrition safety-net programs, including food stamps, but has been roundly criticizedfor continuing to subsidize wealthy farmers.
Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) summarized the critics objections in a statement released Wednesday evening:
“„While I support the important nutrition and food stamp programs, … we should not give away billions of dollars to wealthy farmers. This does not need to be an either-or proposition, and I vote to sustain the veto so Congress can pursue reforms for the next farm bill that would protect the environment and help farmers who truly need it.
The message went unheard. The Senate vote Thursday was 82 to 13; the House vote a day earlier was 316 to 108.
