DeSmogBlog’s Richard Littlemore took notice of my post on the research into the effect of climate change on hurricanes. Unfortunately, I think Littlemore misunderstood the point I was trying to make when I said that "the science isn’t all in yet." I was simply saying that there isn’t a solid consensus among scientists about whether global warming affects frequencyof tropical storms.
Here’s what he said:
So, the smartest scientists in the world are arguing about whether there will be more hurricanes or fewer, but they agree that, either way, they’re going to be stronger and more dangerous, and the Washington Independent decides that means we should ignore climate change until "all" the science is in.
Ignoring climate change is the last thing any of us should do. And what I say in my post, and in fact everything I’ve written on climate change, makes that clear. What I was getting at is that it’s irresponsible to attribute growing numbers of natural disasters to climate change without looking at all the science.
For a deeper look into that science, and an explanation of the modeling used in the report we’re discussing, take a look at this postby Real Climate, which does a good job of breaking things down.
