The Washington Post has a tough storyFriday about moves by John McCain that helped a big fundraiser. As the Post put it (above the fold, for people who care about that kind of old-media thing):
Sen. John McCain championed legislation that will let an Arizona rancher trade remote grassland and ponderosa pine forest here for acres of valuable federally owned property that is ready for development, a land swap that now stands to directly benefit one of his top presidential campaign fundraisers.
The story comes just a day after Paul Waldman and David Brock released a new chapterof their "Free Ride: John McCain and the Media," that documents coverage of McCain "the maverick" since the book was published in March. Their bottom line: "what we call the Myth of McCain is still intact."
That may be. But with stories like today’s in the Post and other recent looksat McCain, not to mention that page-one treatment in The New York Times of his, um, friend, the lobbyist, as well as growing scrutinyof Cindy McCain’s beer-based fortune — and how it’s helped him jet aroundthe country — they may need to do another chapter before November.
