In a surprising turn of events, of the four major-party candidates, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is perhaps most accessible to the media.
According to The Page, CNN will air bits of Drew Griffin’s sitdown with Palin throughout all three hours of “The Situation Room” today, starting at 4 p.m. EDT. TV Newserreports Palin will submit to her first network interview, with NBC’s Brian Williams, since her disastrous turn withCBS’ Katie Couriclast month.
Palin seems to have grown more comfortable with the national press. CBS’ Scott Conroyreported the Sen. John McCain’s running mate took questions from reporters covering her three times over the weekend. In contrast, McCain has answered questions from his traveling press only once since Aug. 13, and that was only for 10 minutes. Neither Sen. Barack Obama nor Sen. Joe Biden have held a press conference this month.
The big question remaining is whether Palin’s interview with Couric was a fluke, or if she can really handle a grilling on a range of issues. At this late date, the last thing the McCain campaign can afford is a week of negative headlines and late-night jokes stemming from another deer-in-headlights performance.
