Possibly to rebut media reportsthat Florida Gov. Charlie Crist and the state’s Republican Party are distancing themselves from the McCain campaign’s recent negativity, Crist put in a quick appearance on a hastily scheduled campaign conference call with reporters this afternoon.
The call, announced two minutes in advance, allowed Crist and Doug Holtz-Eakin, Sen. John McCain’s economic adviser, to repeat the campaign’s talking points. Then Crist took five questions, including one about the GOP bogeyman du jour — voter fraud.
The Republican National Committee has sent out five press releases in the last week addressing the issue and specifically mentioning Florida. Crist said he was unconcerned about the possibility of voter fraud in his state.
“I don’t think that we anticipate much of a problem with voter fraud. I know there have been more national stories talking about it, but in consultation with our Secretary of State, Kurt Browning, we don’t anticipate it will be a significant problem - hopefully not a problem at all - in Florida.”
Crist went on to praise Democratic voter registration efforts in Florida and elsewhere.
“I think the ground game is going very well here in Florida, frankly on both sides… Historically, the Republican Party of Florida has done an extraordinary job, as it relates specifically to the get-out-the-vote effort. The Democratic Party, to their credit, frankly, has had a tremendous registration effort this year, and I guess in more than Florida.”
Apparently, Crist didn’t get the memo that ACORN is in the process of stealing the election for the Democrats.
