Talking Points Memo reportsthat the McCain campaign is shifting its ad spending away from Colorado and states won by Sen. John Kerry in 2004 to those won by President George W. Bush, particularly Virginia and Florida.
That’s all well and good — except that the numbers still add up to a victory for Sen. Barack Obama.
Never mind that Obama currently holds a comfortable leadin Virginia and a modest onein Florida. If Obama wins every Kerry state, plus Iowa and New Mexico (where he leads by 12.5 and 8.4 points, respectively, according to the RealClearPolitics average), he ends up with 264 electoral votes. Throw Colorado’s nine electors into the mix, and Obama wins with 273.
The McCain campaign’s decision to cut backon Colorado ad spending made some sense when it announced its intention to compete for Pennsylvania’s 21 electoral votes. But if it’s reducing his spending there too, as TPM suggests, you have to wonder what kind of strategy Rick Davis and company are employing.
